Vision-guided robot feeding for flexible assembly processes

The combination of machine vision and robotics enables flexible and automated component handling. For a leading home appliance manufacturer, we developed a solution that reliably identifies, picks up, and automatically feeds different components to the assembly process.

Together with our project partner, we implemented a camera-guided handling solution for the home appliance manufacturer Miele for the automated feeding of stators in the production of drive motors for household tumble dryers. The goal of the project was to develop a flexible system that can be easily adapted to different components and assembly processes.

An industrial robot is used for implementation, its gripper equipped with a camera system. The machine vision system records both the number of available components and their exact position within the containers. Since components can deviate from their original position during transport and provision, reliable position determination was the central prerequisite for automated removal.

Based on the captured image data, the system calculates the actual position of the components, enabling the robot to pick them up autonomously. The stators are then fed to a turning station and subsequent assembly steps. This reduces manual intervention while ensuring stable processes and high system availability.

The special feature of this solution is the intelligent combination of robotics and machine vision. Thanks to camera-guided position detection, it is possible to react flexibly to different component positions without manual correction. The solution we developed thus offers the necessary flexibility to efficiently map various products and future requirements.

The increasing demand for flexible production systems and automated material flows was decisive for the development of this application. The project demonstrates how the targeted use of modern machine vision and intelligent robotics can economically automate assembly processes while increasing process reliability and system flexibility.
