ID develops special quality inspection for TAS GmbH

This project, which ID developed this year as a Zebra system integrator for industrial automation specializing in machine vision for the automotive supplier TAS, is causing a stir in the industry. At the ID booth at VISION 2024 in October, ID department head Michael Sartor presented the project – here again the most important details summarized.

The TAS GmbH, a specialist for surface technology based in Kreuzwertheim, and ID Engineering have been project partners for some time. TAS refines metal surfaces, especially those used as battery closures in electric vehicles, protecting the batteries from external influences.

At the beginning of the year, Managing Director Temel Taş approached the ID specialists for image processing and deep learning with a special request. TAS needed a more accurate and adaptable optical quality inspection to meet the high standards of the automotive industry. For this, ID, as a system integrator, used the image processing software from Zebra Technologies.

Clear task definition and solution-oriented development

TAS requires a special process for the precise processing of the components. For this purpose, the battery covers are introduced into the inspection device using robot kinematics. During the visual inspection of the battery covers for motor vehicles, a special camera system is necessary to search for possible defects that could impair the quality. For this, the ID experts for industrial automation with specialization in machine vision and automation were engaged.

Precise engineering at the highest level

After several weeks of planning and development, the time had come: The camera system was manufactured in such a way that the entire component width could be scanned for possible defects such as coating irregularities, surface scratches and problems with the laser marking.

“The main advantage of the so-called Aurora Vision Studio-Software™ from Zebra is its development and execution speed while analyzing many and sometimes large image files. This is much faster than with other technologies we have tested,” says Michael Sartor, ID department head for industrial image processing. “The scalable Zebra system is easy to use and its no-code solution enables rapid development. Beyond the technology, we appreciate the valuable support from Zebra.”

The TAS Managing Director is very satisfied with the successful integration of the surface treatment technology and a customized quality control system with deep learning. The result represents a significant advance in quality control. With the support of ID and the image processing system from Zebra Technologies, the entrepreneur can meet the high quality standards of the automotive industry in his company. Joint plans for future projects already exist.
