Automated 3D Weld Spot Inspection
Precise 3D laser triangulation and intelligent image processing enable automated quality inspection of weld spots – including robot-assisted ultrasonic follow-up inspection.
In this challenging quality inspection project, we developed a solution for the automated detection and measurement of weld spots in complex vehicle geometries. A high-resolution 3D laser triangulation sensor from Automation Technology, mounted on a linear axis, generates an inclined point cloud, allowing weld spots to be precisely recognized, measured with sub-millimeter accuracy, and checked for burrs.

The 3D data is evaluated using Zebra Aurora Vision, ensuring a particularly reliable and detailed analysis. The approximately 35-degree inclined point cloud enables optimal detection even of hard-to-reach weld spots. The determined position data is transmitted directly to a robot, which performs a subsequent ultrasonic inspection. This creates a continuous, automated inspection process that combines state-of-the-art 3D measurement technology with intelligent geometry processing and robot-assisted automation.
