Process-reliable removal of adhesive residues after hemming

The reliable cleaning of hem adhesive residues ensures stable subsequent processes in body shop production. An automated and application-specific cleaning solution minimizes contamination, reduces rework, and supports consistently high component quality.

When hemming doors, tailgates, or hoods, excess hem adhesive can escape from the hem. If these residues remain on the component, they can become a relevant quality risk in subsequent process steps. It is particularly critical that many hem adhesives do not cure completely immediately after hemming, but remain partially viscous until the paint is later baked.

In this phase, there is a risk that adhesive residues will detach, enter pretreatment baths, or settle elsewhere on components. This can result in contaminated process baths, paint defects, rework, or scrap. What starts as local contamination at the hem can thus become a problem for the entire process chain.

With the V21 cleaning device, ID Engineering offers an automated solution for removing escaped hem adhesive. Cleaning usually takes place directly after hemming and removes adhesive residues before they can impair subsequent pretreatment, sealing, or painting processes.

The application-specific coordination with the component, hem geometry, adhesive, and process parameters is crucial for a stable cleaning result. Depending on the application, roller geometry, roller width, and cleaning tape are designed individually. In hemming applications, for example, a stepped cleaning roller can be used to specifically reach the relevant area and remove adhesive residues reproducibly.

Automated cleaning reduces risks in subsequent processes. Clean components create better conditions for pretreatment, sealing processes, and painting. At the same time, rework, scrap, and additional protective or masking measures can be reduced or avoided depending on the application.
